My Story
Welcome. I am honored you have found your way here, and invite you to step into the world where my life, art, and philosophy converge.
Born in Finland and raised amid the mid-Atlantic’s triad of New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, my early life unfolded against a backdrop of refined architecture, vast natural beauty, and the hallowed halls of countless museums. Here, in the quiet moments between nature’s grandeur and humanity’s finest achievements, my sense of wonder took root.
By my twenties, my fascination with the creative spirit deepened—not simply in the works themselves, but in the profound inner lives of the artists I encountered. Their depth of thought, their deliberation, and their unyielding devotion to craft resonated with me. My own path to art was, at first, forged in the disciplined world of the construction trades, where I mastered tools, materials, and precision—laying the groundwork for the tactile fluency that now defines my sculpture.
In my mid-thirties, I began shaping my first body of fine art: large-format, pigmented-ink compositions on watercolor paper, evoking the Japanese sensibility of mono no aware—the beauty found in impermanence. Within a single year, these works were accepted into fifteen national juried exhibitions and earned multiple awards. It was then that I could finally claim the title of artist.
Yet accomplishment was not an endpoint, but a beginning. I pursued formal study, earning my BA in Fine Art from Monmouth University (summa cum laude) and my MFA from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. These years were transformative, refining my vision, deepening my mastery, and revealing art as a dialogue between the eternal and the fleeting.
The next decade carried me to the vast horizons of Hawaii and the rugged landscapes of Idaho, where I taught both science and art—sharing beauty and knowledge with communities often distant from the cultural centers of the world. These experiences strengthened my conviction that art is not merely an object, but a lived exchange between nature, maker, and beholder.
My work today is grounded in elemental truth. Clay, wood, stone, natural pigment, and metal are my constant companions—materials whose enduring nature contrasts with my own transience, yet binds me to it. I allow their intrinsic qualities to guide my hand, revealing forms that speak to the tension between permanence and change. Birth, life, struggle, death, and decay—observed directly in nature—become the silent architecture of my compositions.
Each piece is a meditation: an object to be lived with, contemplated, and returned to, offering its owner a timeless dialogue with the forces that shape us all.
I invite you to explore my work as you would a private collection—patiently, intimately, and with the awareness that beauty resides not only in what endures, but in what inevitably passes away.
